Evokativ

The book Evokativ represents visually strong photographs of Libuše Jarcovjáková taken between 1970 and 1989 in communist Czechoslovakia during a dark period of political oppression. The lack of personal freedom contrasts with snapshots of lovers, night wanders or never-ending parties.

The visually striking personal and clearly composed style of Jarcovjáková mix the raw with the poetic. She is unafraid of imperfections, portrays the world around her, other people, and her feelings of apparent hopelessness with unwavering honesty. Her photographers recount freedom, express fluidity, and atmosphere, and bear an authentic and clear-eyed witness to the life of an artist.

Evokativ was shortlisted on the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards 2019 in a category The PhotoBook of the Year.
